Telehealth is simply the term for receiving healthcare services remotely, using technology like video calls.
It requires less of a time commitment since you are not having to travel to your appointment. Telehealth is also a better choice for college students without transportation. In addition, you are able to participate in therapy where you are most comfortable. Some telehealth therapists work out of their home, which many clients report aids in the development of the therapeutic relationship because they feel like they get to know their therapist on a more personal level.
Most insurance companies require a diagnosis which is often unnecessary and can have a negative impact on an individual's perception of themselves. Also, there is a loss of confidentiality. Insurance companies often require that a psychologist share their notes with them and justify treatment. Lastly, when an individual uses insurance to pay for therapy, it becomes part of the personal health record and they no longer have control over who that information is shared with.
A psychologist has the most intense, lengthy training of all of the therapy fields. They are uniquely skilled in assessment and diagnosis, therefore they typically have the required credentials for most documentation. In addition, they are required to complete the most continuing education units of any of the branches of therapy, keeping them the most up-to-date.
